INTRODUCTRION TO MANAGEMENT
In general, the term management means the activities of the group of persons who manage the organization. It is a universal concept and practical everywhere, not only in business organizations, but also in government, religious, and charitable organizations.
"Management is the art of getting things done through and with people in formally organized groups. it is the art of creating an environment in which people can perform and individuals could cooperate towards attaining of group goals."
FEATURES OF MANAGEMENT
Management is simply the process of structuring and coordinating resources to meet a particular objective. Inherently, large ranges of activities are involved from planning to organizing, leading, and controlling. Some major characteristics are discussed as below:
1. Goal-oriented: All activities related to management always focus on certain specific goals or objectives. The goals might either be short-term or long-term, financial or non-financial.
2. Pervasive: It is involved in all types of organizations, whether in the form of size, structure, or industry. Whether it is a business, a government agency, or even a non-profit organization, every organization has a compulsion for managers to plan, organize, lead, and control organizational activities.
3. Process-oriented: Management is not a one-time event; it's a continuous process. Managers continuously engage themselves in planning, organizing, leading and controlling the activities of the organization.
4. Social process: Management is about working with, and through people. The managers must develop the ability to understand human behavior, motivate people, and build very effective teams.
5. Multidimensional: Management is a variously dimensional activity that developing organizations perform. Some of the more common functions of management would then be planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling.
6. Continual process: Management never stops. Once a plan is in action, it is up to management to measure progress and readjust where necessary. This way, the cycle continues over time as organizations strive to reach their goals.
7. Intangible: Management is an intangible force. It cannot be seen or touched; it can only be felt in its effects throughout an organization. Effective management can lead to increased productivity, improved morale, and greater profitability.
8. Ability to balance effectiveness and efficiency: Effectiveness refers to the achievement of the right goals. Efficiency is concerned with getting things done right. Proper managers must combine these two areas where priorities often seem to conflict.
- Management as a composite process means a series of interrelated functions that need to be performed together in order to succeed; these include planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling.
- Management features help appreciate the complexity and the critical role that the manager has within any organization.
IMPORTANCE OF MANAGEMENT
- Development of Individuals and Society: Management not only helps the organization grow but also serves in the development of individuals and society. Making provisions for the growth and development of skill sets within an organization, management nurtures skilled workers. Successful organizations develop a society by providing employment opportunities, promoting innovation, and engaging in corporate social responsibility.
- That is to say, management is the backbone of any successful organization because it aligns people toward a goal, enables efficient use of resources, and builds a happy, productive work environment. Further, it leads to the realization of organizational goals and contributes toward a greater good in society as a whole.
